TIEP XUAN – The power of Spring
Secret (*) training for body and mind – a key to longevity
This book written by Grand Master PHAN HOANG and published in 2017 collects and describes various aspects of the four exercises of which the sequence is composed. The deep knowledge of each movement causes a series of mechanisms to be activated that lead to both physical and mental benefits.
“… On the corner of ByWard Market a bagpipe player in colourful Irish dress played his nostalgic music, arousing general interest.
I stood for a long time on the other side of the street, watching the way he breathed in and out, filling his bagpipes with air. There was something vaguely similar to the way I play the Vietnamese flute, keeping the rhythm of the air flow. There is also something similar between the Vietnamese flute and the way our Quyen perform breathing exercises, namely: keeping the rhythm of the breath.
… Then, the next day, I went to a nearby park to repeat the same exercises under a very old tree.
A tree is simply a tree, if our mind cannot see anything beyond its physical form. But a tree can tell us many stories and can give us many teachings if we open our eyes, our minds and our souls to it.
… Spring is a good time to go out and practise our four Spring Exercises, with the five methods of deep breathing.
This is a key to a long, healthy and happy life.”

(*) The meaning of the word ‘secret’ should not be understood in the sense: ‘that which is kept hidden and not revealed to anyone’ but rather in the meaning of ’embedded in the sequence through its many aspects’.
